When Chiratae Ventures was set up in 2006, its team did not start out investing with the goal of impacting lives. “A VC investor has to be relevant in provisioning success for the companies he is investing in. The firm has made 83 investments — all of which are companies founded in India — and 33 exits to date. While a sizeable chunk of its investments comes from investors in India, Chiratae also manages investments by the Washington-based International Finance Corporation, the World Bank’s private investment arm, and US-based multinational corporation Cisco Investments. To illustrate my point, the market cap of the top 15 technology companies in the US in 2019 was 30% of the country’s GDP, compared with 15% in 2015,” he says.
