Respecting people’s rights

Photo: BIGSTOCKPolice should work for the people, and not for themselvesRestoring people’s faith in the goodness of the police force is a worthy goal. However, in order for ordinary citizens to trust our law enforcement officials, the police need to give us credible assurances that we can trust them. On the occasion of Police Week 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that no innocent person should fall victim to torture or harassment at the hands of the police. Simply put, due process must be respected at all times, and harassment of citizens, regardless of the situation, is never OK. Indeed, we want people’s faith in the police force restored, but before that can happen, the mammoth task of widespread police reform lies ahead of us.
