Arappor Iyakkam organised ‘Sakkadai thiruvizha’, a meeting to mobilise residents and officials, sensitising them to the issue of untreated sewage discharged into waterbodies. Residents of R.K. Nagar said sewage was being let into Buckingham Canal every day from the pumping station. Villivakkam SIDCO Nagar residents alleged that the pumping station in their area was discharging untreated sewage into the Villivakkam Lake. Ramapuram residents too pointed to civic issues caused by the sewage pumping station in a residential area and alleged that a delay in the implementation of an underground sewer network was affecting the neighbourhood. Corporation officials claimed that residents were polluting stormwater drains by illegal sewer connections from hundreds of homes in many neighbourhoods.
