Friends of Lake Kimihia have been worried about the deterioration of the lake since work on the Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway began four years ago. Lake Kimihia is about 5km northeast of Huntly which is used by recreational shooters and landowners that live nearby. Resource consent conditions required NZTA to kill all the willows and replant native plants around Lake Kimihia and the tributaries to the east of the lake. "Lake Kimihia is a 'pit stop' for some species as they travel to the Whangamarino wetland and other nearby areas.
