In 2011, his wife, Carolyn, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow cells. Her four-year battle involved two bone marrow transplants, several rounds of therapy and repeated trips to University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainesville and Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute in The Villages. As the mileage added up, so did the cost of gas.
