Robyn Kahukiwa's two versions of painting '’Family Group’', 1973, left, and 2021, suggest that when it comes to valuing artists' work not all things have got better. Yet if this was Australia, the artist would have earnt $2250, 5 per cent of the sale under their 2010 Resale Royalty Scheme. That’s evident in the size of auction-house advertisements, where reproductions of artists’ work provide welcome colour. This was an alarm call for Aotearoa - a resale royalty had already been introduced in the UK and European Union in 2006. A resale royalty makes a small but significant impact, directed to artists and their ‘’family groups’’ who often need it and have earnt it.
