President Trump walks with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to the weekly Senate Republican policy luncheon at the U.S. Capitol on May 15, 2018. Rank-and-file Republicans get invitations to White House dinners or small group meetings on policy issues key to them. Even top Democrats, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), had a private dinner with Trump last fall. So I’ve encouraged President Trump to just call people, to do more of this. Pelosi even dressed down Obama aides at a private meeting after his press secretary publicly suggested that House Democrats would lose the majority in the 2010 midterms.
