GettyIf, last year, you were following Republican political candidates Marla Livengood or Jineea Butler on Twitter, you may have been surprised by their pro-Iranian mindset. According to security firm FireEye, these and other Twitter and Facebook accounts were another example of Iranian misinformation online, using the identities of real people to support Iranian political interests. Following the release of the FireEye report, Facebook has moved to take down 51 Facebook accounts, 36 Pages, seven Groups and three Instagram accounts. In this case, the people behind this activity coordinated with one another and used fake accounts to misrepresent themselves, and that was the basis for our action." FireEye is careful to point out that there's no evidence that the fake activity was orchestrated by the Iranian government.
