It has been more than three decades since FGM was made illegal in the UK, but there is yet to be a successful prosecution. According to estimates by City University, there are 137,000 girls and women living with FGM, and 144,000 girls at risk of FGM in England and Wales. “I was told girls are being cut, and sometimes women before they get married,” she says. “At one school in London, two girls aged 13 and 14 revealed they had had FGM performed on them in this country. Prem says that one woman from the Somali community in London told her that it costs £200 to be cut in the UK.
