Irish people are more likely to live in substandard housing, pay over the odds for rent, and have trouble accessing healthcare than many of our EU neighbours, according to a new report. “This is true both in Ireland and in other EU countries. However, one in eight of the population lives in substandard housing with defects such as a leaking roof, damp and/or rot. Despite the economic recovery, the number of people finding it difficult to make ends meet in Ireland is still higher than it was before the recession in 2007. All but six other EU member states have seen a decrease in the numbers in financial distress over that period.
