New figures from the U.S. Department of Defense have revealed that the U.S. military experienced a spike in sexual assaults in 2018. That represents a 38% increase on the 14,900 cases uncovered when the survey was last conducted in 2016. Notably, the number of service members making formal reports about sexual assaults is far lower than the estimated total number of incidents uncovered by the survey. Out of all service branches, the Marine Corps had the highest rate of estimated sexual assaults last year, up almost 11%. 62% of the most serious sexual assaults involved alcohol use while in 85% of cases, the victim knew their attacker.
