A Forbes analysis of state eviction measures compiled by Princeton University’s Eviction Lab finds that at least 29 states have no sweeping measures preventing evictions or utility shut offs outside of the federal ban. Nine states—Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia—are identified as having zero protections for their renters. Some renters in these states are defended by a patchwork of protections introduced by local governments. That’s the number of evictions that landlords have filed for during the pandemic despite the federal ban, according to the Eviction Lab tracker.
