Over the course of his illustrious and oft-controversial career, Kim Ki-duk bagged the prestigious Best Director award at 61st Venice International Film Festival for 3-Iron and Un Certain Regard prize at 2011 Cannes Film Festival for Arirang. Hailed as one of the most gifted Asian filmmakers, Kim Ki-duk gained acclaim for his art-house cinematic works, which were also condemned for their use of violence and depiction of animal cruelty. One of his notoriously violent films,The Isle, released in 2000, famously made audience members vomit and faint at the Venice festival during a screening. Kim Ki-duk made headlines in recent years after being accused of sexual misconduct by several women as the #MeToo movement had begun to gain momentum in South Korean film industry at the time, though a court partially dismissed one sexual assault charge against him.
