Renewable energy projects continue to face delays

The government has yet to make any significant headway in implementing 18 projects for generating electricity from renewable energy, particularly from solar power. The state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) has signed agreements with private-sector entrepreneurs for 1,050MW power plant projects, and has also signed power purchase deals with five of them. According to Renewable Energy Policy 2008, Bangladesh had set a target of generating 10% of total electricity or 2,000MW, from renewable energy sources by 2020. Usually, a solar power plant requires three to four acres of land to generate each megawatt of electricity.”“Many are blaming the shortage of land. The deal was inked for a 200MW solar power plant to be set up at Teknaf.
