Renee Pack: Pregnant New Zealand woman claims white-tailed spider bite required hospital surgery,Australia’s poor innocent white-tailed spider is being blamed for ulcers again. This time, it’s a pregnant woman from New Zealand who is visiting the spider. Renee Peck said she has undergone two surgeries, spent seven nights in hospital and will need a skin graft which she claims may have been caused by an Australian white-tailed spider bite. Peck has been bitten by a white-tailed spider in the past and said she saw what she thought was another spider on her bed before being bitten. It is believed that early colonists brought the much-maligned but ultimately harmless spider to New Zealand in the 1880s.
