In January and September 2016, North Korea conducted its fourth and fifth nuclear weapons test, claiming to have detonated its first hydrogen bomb in January. In February 2016, North Korea fired a long-range rocket to launch a satellite into orbit. China is North Korea’s most important ally and trading partner—83% of North Korea’s output is purchased by China—hence, North Korea’s erratic behavior represents a geopolitical paradox for China. With or without China’s assistance, however, the U.S. must continue to develop strategies to solve the North Korea Crisis. Further, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that North Korea will face "fire and fury" if it continues to threaten the U.S.
