But this August I discovered yet another reason to return to Western Massachusetts: the Berkshire Opera Festival, which, for the second year in a row, has struck me with awe. It was one of those productions that change the way you think about things, and I vowed I’d be back this summer. This year’s production of “Rigoletto” proved the experience was no fluke. The Romanian-born baritone Sebastian Catana plays Rigoletto as a dry, lunky doofus, yet finds touching ways to play up the paternal sentimentality that ultimately undoes him.
