On July 11, Attorney General Jeff Sessions delivered a speech on religious freedom to the lawyers at the Alliance Defending Freedom. There are legitimate, although often technical, arguments to be made against any claim to free speech or religious liberty. Consider the controversy last week and its relation to the actual text of Attorney General Session’s speech. The controversy arose only because of the people involved, and therefore the topic at hand - religious liberty - could not be intelligently discussed on the merits. This is troubling, not just for the future of religious liberty, but also for the future of our public discourse and social fabric.
