Ben McCartney had one goal and two assists on Monday night, leading the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-1 win over the Regina Pats before 3,105 fans at Westoba Place. Regina (10-19-3-1) missed a chance to close the gap between itself and the Wheat Kings (16-17-1-2), who occupy the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Max Paddock — the reigning WHL goalie of the week — made 29 saves for the Pats, who outshot Brandon 35-33, including 14-7 in the third period. Wheat Kings netminder Jiri Patera picked up the win, along with second-star honours. The Pats are back home on Wednesday for their annual New Year’s game (4 p.m., Brandt Centre) against the Prince Albert Raiders.
