Refinery goes back to maintenance mode after tsunami scare

Marsden Point refinery in Whangarei was evacuated after tsunami warnings early on Friday. The country's oil refinery in Whangarei says it will return to business after tsunami warnings forced staff to evacuate on Friday. Work at Marsden Point switched to its emergency response plan after an 8.1 earthquake in the Kermadec Islands which triggered a Civil Defence warning for Northlanders to seek higher ground. A refinery spokeswoman said staff left the site and there was a temporary shutdown of refinery utilities, marine operations and the refinery’s fuel pipeline to Auckland. But the impact was greatly lessened by the fact that the site was already shutdown for a month of maintenance work.
