Redd review — charged, cogent and ultimately redemptive

★★★★☆A decade ago the Barbican took the British hip-hop dance-theatre company Boy Blue under its wing. The latest result of the venue’s support is this meaty ensemble production co-presented with Dance Umbrella. I have described Redd as an ensemble work, but in many respects it is at heart a solo for the choreographer Kenrick “H20” Sandy. Much of the time the eight other dancers function as adjuncts of his dramatic journey by facilitating — and occasionally challenging — his emotional progress. Redd is the kinetic version of an interior monologue, an outward and abstract expression of thoughts and feelings associated with grief or what the company refers to as “irreversible loss”.
