Large parts of England and Wales were also hit by the heavy snowfalls which closed roads, paralysed the rail and bus network and closed schools for 450,000 children north of the border. The heavily populated central belt of Scotland bore the brunt of the extreme weather and the Scottish government urged workers who braved it to return home as soon as possible.
