Heike Schiele and Dennis Emery sort through some of the plastic collected during Feilding’s plastic pollution challenge. From May 17, Palmerston North no longer accepted plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 and 7 in recycling. But Heike Schiele, co-chair of the Environment Network Manawatū, said the update was just an honest acknowledgement of what types of plastics were genuinely recyclable. “We really need the Government to incentivise good recycling practices.”In Feilding, the plastic pollution cleanup was done alongside Ngāti Kauwhata. The network had hosted annual cleanups since its origins as a 2018 science project by a Palmerston North student.
