The girl, who was a ward of the State, had become pregnant following a statutory rape committed by a neighbour in December 1991. The girl involved could not be identified and the matter was referred to, before the High Court, as the X Case. However, the international media coverage attracted by the X Case – and particularly the injunction – prompted a flood of correspondence to senior Irish politicians and President Robinson. It warned that forcing a child victim of rape to endure an unwanted pregnancy was a breach of human rights.
