That is the heart of what Christians celebrate at Christmas, the great going-down of God. The great going-down is so that there might be a great coming-up, but this time Jesus doesn’t return alone but with all those who are his disciples. The Christian idea of progress does not promise a better world, but that the world is now better. There was a before-Christ and an after, a great going-down so there can now be a great coming-up. So I wish our readers a measure now of that peace that the world cannot give.
