During the Capitals' innings, Ashwin and Rishabh Pant snuck an extra run after the ball was thrown in and ricocheted off Pant. It was Ashwin who called for the extra run and, when he was out in the following over, he was involved in an argument with Southee and then Morgan. In the Kolkata innings, Ashwin dismissed Morgan for a duck and celebrated animatedly. Reacting to the controversy on Twitter, Shane Warne labelled Ashwin's actions "disgraceful", writing: "The world shouldn’t be divided on this topic and Ashwin. Now, in a series of tweets, Ashwin explained his version of events and claimed the England captain called him "a disgrace".
