Specialists have cautioned that a super El Niño is becoming increasingly likely later this year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has estimated a 25 per cent probability that El Niño could strengthen into a super El Niño by autumn or early winter. A super El Niño develops when ocean temperature anomalies exceed at least 2 degrees Celsius. The most recent super El Niño took place 11 years ago, between 2015 and 2016. "We will likely see at least a moderate El Niño, but more likely a strong El Niño," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill.
