WASHINGTON (AP) – A snowy owl touring what appears to be iconic buildings in the country’s capital captivates bird watchers who manage to catch a glimpse of the rare, radiant visitor from the Arctic. Far from its summer breeding grounds in Canada, the snowy owl was first seen on January 3rd, the day a winter storm threw eight inches of snow over the city. North American snowy owls don’t go far below the Great Lakes or Cape Cod area for most winters, Weidensaul said. Snowy owl, a lifesaver for me in a very, very unlikely environment! Scientists believe snow owls are critically endangered and estimate the total global population to be less than 30,000 birds.
