Without proper planning, a ransomware infection can leave victims in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situation. According to Chief Erika Shields, the Department lost years of dashcam footage as a result. By the end of April the cost to undo the damage from the ransomware had already surpassed $2.6 million. Of 424 total programs running on Atlanta's systems around 150 were disrupted or taken offline completely. At the time of the infection, the ransom worked out to just over $50,000.
