Rangamati hartal postponed


The 48-hour hartal enforced by Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Nagorik Parishad in the district protesting the killing of five people, including microbus driver Sajib Hawladar, in Naniarchar upazila was postponed on Monday afternoon, eight hours after its enforcement. Begum Nurjahan, convener of Parbatya Nagorik Parishad, came up with the announcement around 2:30pm following assurance from the local administration of meeting their demands. The vehicular movement on all routes in the district remained suspended since the morning following the hartal. On May 4, five people were killed and eight others injured in a gun attack on a motorcade of the followers of slain Naniarchar Upazila Parishad Chairman Shaktiman Chakma at Betchhari in the upazila. Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, 55, also a leader of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma faction), was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of the upazila parishad complex on May 3.
