Feilding's Ranfurly Residential Care Centre will be a stop-off on the way home from Palmerston North Hospital for some older people from this week. The MidCentral District Health Board has arranged for the centre to take some patients who no longer need acute hospital care, but are not yet well enough to go home. It would also help the hospital, releasing beds to increase its capacity to cope with incoming patients. Nwosu said the step-down beds could provide a safe and sustainable transition to home for patients who no longer required acute hospital care but who were not yet well enough to cope safely at home. An intermediate care co-ordinator will liaise with patients, their whānau and the facility to keep them well informed about discharge plans.
