Both the Ontario and federal governments have announced plans to do something about the mass of plastic waste that is littering our neighbourhoods and swamping our landfills. The bigger part of Trudeau’s plan to do something at some point, if re-elected, involves making the producers of packaging responsible for the cost of recycling it. One of the reasons for recycling, and for the province’s new focus on reducing plastic packaging, is to preserve landfill space. The government estimates that at our current rate of producing waste, Ontario has only 10 to 20 years of landfill capacity. The only thing that might be more unpopular is incineration, but Ontario should be assessing its costs and benefits.
