Randall Denley: Ontario's finally taking action on surgery backlog, but without meaningful targets


Article content continuedBy contrast, Ontario missed its window this summer when hospitals were under-utilized and waiting for COVID-19 patients who never came. During the delay, the surgical backlog was increasing by between 9,000 and 12,000 procedures a week. Now, the province is tackling the surgery problem just as flu season starts, when hospitals are typically overloaded. The province will also rely to some degree on private surgery clinics, which it euphemistically refers to as “alternate health facilities.” These are existing clinics that perform smaller procedures. That would suggest that the additional surgical dollars should be disproportionately spent outside the voter-rich provincial capital.
