As Ramadan ushers into our lives again, millions of Muslims start fasting from sunrise to sundown. As a Canadian Ahmadi Muslim, I feel it incumbent upon me to share with my fellow Canadians what Ramadan means to me and the billions of Muslims around the world. Ramadan is a time for Muslims to self-reflect and self-reform. We give up our daily sustenance to feel the anguish and sorrow of others who have nothing and, in turn, grow ever more thankful. Contrary to popular notion, even among Muslims, Ramadan is not just a a month-long period, but should serve to grow one in humility and gratitude throughout the year, until another blessed month comes to push us through the next year, and thus continues the cycle of self-reform and self-reflection.
