Rajnath will discuss illegal migration with CMs of eastern states


NEW DELHI: Home minister Rajnath Singh will take a detailed review of progress in fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border and ways to tackle illegal influx of migrants, including Rohingya , at a meeting with chief ministers and home ministers of eastern states in Kolkata on December 7.CMs or home ministers of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram have been invited to the meeting, which will focus on how to secure the border with Bangladesh by plugging gaps and completing fencing of porous areas with the cooperation of the states. Sources in the MHA said Mamata Banerjee has consented to be part of the deliberations.The border review is the fourth in a series of such meetings undertaken by the home minister as part of a time-bound plan to identify problems specific to various international borders, in consultation with the relevant border states. He has held review meetings with chief ministers/home ministers of states bordering Pakistan, China and Myanmar.The border reviews with states sharing boundary with Bhutan and Nepal are due to be held in the near future. "This is part of the home ministry's agenda to secure India's international borders by addressing problems specific to each border. The cooperation and active participation of border states is needed for the purpose," a home ministry official said.
