The budget for development of the railways is Tk12,491 crore in FY2020-21, which was Tk10,249 crore in the last year's revised budget. According to a budget document, construction of 900 kms dual gauge double track and 1,581 kms new rail track will be completed within this fiscal year. Refurbishment of 1,527 kms rail track and 100 passenger coaches, procurement of 31 locomotives, and improvement of the signalling system at 222 stations will be done in the running fiscal year, said the document. According to a senior Railways Ministry official, the government has taken a number of measures for the overall development of this sector, and implementation of the 30-year “Railways Masterplan (2016-2045)” at a cost of Tk553,662 crore has already begun. Some Tk24,825 crore has been allocated for the development of road transport and highways division for FY2020-21, while it was Tk23,960 crore in last year’s revised budget.
