Racial segregation persists in US housing market even diverse cities

Many of America's major housing markets remain racially segregated, including many cities that boast about being a 'melting pot,' according to a new study. The problem was more prevalent in areas - like New York - with limited affordable housing, where minority populations are often concentrated in specific neighborhoods. The study found major gaps in home ownership between white and black households. Nationwide, about 72 percent of white households owned homes, compared to roughly 57 percent of Asian households, 48 percent of Hispanic households and 42 percent of black households. 'Black populations are the most segregated minority group in all of the nation's 25 largest metros except for Phoenix, where the Hispanic segregation index is highest,' he said.
