“This is the most an RNC chair has ever raised in November of a non-election year,” RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens wrote in a statement mocking “part-time” DNC Chairman Tom Perez. The RNC, however, ended the election cycle with a higher burn rate than its Democratic counterpart and slightly less to show for it. According to the RNC’s figures, it raised $121.4 million in 2017, having started the year with $25.3 million on hand. By contrast, the DNC started 2017 with $10.5 million on hand, raised $60.7 million, and ended the cycle with $6.3 million on hand and $2.6 million in debt. The Democrats ended up getting a better return on investments in November elections; in Virginia, for example, the RNC gave $5 million to gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie, while the DNC delivered just $1.5 million.
