RM70,000 in fireworks seized near Thai border - Nation

ALOR SETAR: A man was arrested while 36 boxes of firecrackers and fireworks worth RM70,000 were seized at a fishermen’s landing area in Tasik Ah Ning, Padang Sanai near Padang Terap at the Malaysia-Thai border. Padang Terap district police chief Deputy Supt Noh Idris said the seizure was carried out when a black 4WD vehicle, parked by the lake, was spotted at about 11am on Saturday. “A 36-year-old local man was at the wheel, and upon inspection, the team found 20 boxes of firecrackers and fireworks in the vehicle. DSP Noh said the suspect admitted that the fireworks had been smuggled in from a neighbouring country by boat. The firecrackers and fireworks are believed meant to be sold for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, he added.
