RAF fighter jets meet Russian aircraft flying into 'UK area of interest'


The pair of fighter planes were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, north east Scotland in the early afternoon. An RAF spokesperson initially told the Daily Record: "Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth were scrambled today against unidentified aircraft approaching the UK area of interest." The RAF then released an update and said Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth and were joined by an RAF Voyager from RAF Brize Norton. Intercepting the two Russian aircraft over the North Sea, the Typhoons remained nearby to monitor the aircraft within UK airspace. An RAF spokesperson added: "RAF Typhoons are scrambled during these incidents to secure and safeguard the skies of the United Kingdom.
