South Africa’s ruling party gave President Zuma 48 hours to quit or face being forced out in a humiliating no confidence vote in parliament, the state broadcaster reported last night. The ultimatum was issued to Mr Zuma by Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of the African National Congress (ANC), after the party’s executive committee met for eight hours in an emergency session. Mr Ramaphosa was driven in a motorcade to Mr Zuma’s residence to deliver the message in person and he returned to the party meeting about an hour later. Until now Mr Zuma, 75, has rejected suggestions that he hand over the running of the country to Mr Ramaphosa.
