Queenstown to take control of airport

The long-term future of the Wanaka Airport will now be in the hands of the Queenstown Airport Corporation, but the community will still have a say in how it is run. Queenstown Lakes district councillors voted to grant a long-term lease and management arrangement for the Wanaka Airport to the QAC at a full council meeting in Lake Hawea yesterday. A review was carried out last year which identified five options for the future governance of the airport. The council’s preferred governance option was to enter into a long-term lease and management arrangement with the QAC, which is a council-controlled trading organisation. As part of the arrangement Wanaka would be a complementary and supplementary airport to Queenstown International Airport.
