Queen Elizabeth II: looking back at her visits to the New Forest

1979Her Majesty returned to the area in 1979 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the New Forest. The occasion was unique as it was the first time a reigning Queen had paid an official visit to the district. The Queen then made her way to the Knightwood Oak – possibly the oldest oak in the New Forest at 375 years of age – as onlookers lined the route with cameras. Commemorating the ninth century of the Forest, the new tree is to be known as the Queen’s Oak, and is believed to have grown from an acorn of the Knightwood Oak.
