Quebec waiter who put allergic diner in coma by serving him salmon avoids criminal charges

MONTREAL — A Quebec waiter arrested in August for serving salmon tartare to an allergic customer will not face criminal charges, Quebec’s prosecution service announced Tuesday. Sherbrooke police arrested the unidentified 22-year-old waiter Aug. 3 on suspicion of criminal negligence following an incident in May that left Simon-Pierre Canuel in a coma after the beef tartare he ordered turned out to be salmon. Canuel said he took one bite of the dish in the dimly lit restaurant before realizing it was fish. He said the waiter failed to note the allergy on the order and did not alert the kitchen staff. Canuel has said he plans to file a civil suit against the restaurant and the waiter.
