Quebec Minister Says Tearful Students Changed His Mind On Immigration Program

Jacques Boissinot/CP Quebec Minister of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusiveness Simon Jolin-Barrette speaks at a news conference at the legislature in Quebec City on March 28, 2019. QUEBEC — The Quebec government has backtracked on proposed changes to an immigration program aimed at fast-tracking residency for post-secondary students that would’ve seen many of the current participants sent home. Jolin-Barrette, who didn’t meet with the students, said their testimonials at a news conference inside the legislature led him to change his mind. Jin Xing, a 36-year-old drafting student, says that students who came to Quebec to build a life here are having their lives upended as the province plans to reform the Quebec experience program. “I didn’t like my day,” Legault told reporters Wednesday morning.
