Quarantine has hit just when we need the sun


Starved of vitamin D from November to March, we need to get outside to top upWith government advice to stay indoors because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is difficult for many people to get some sunshine, but this is the time of year when sunlight can start making vitamin D, essential for healthy bones, teeth, muscles and quite possibly the body’s immune system. Around noon the sunlight outdoors is growing strong enough in ultraviolet B (UVB) rays needed to make vitamin D in exposed skin. Being indoors by a sunny window does not work because UVB rays cannot penetrate glass. After winter, most of us are depleted in our reserves of vitamin D. From November to March the sunlight in the UK is not strong enough in UVB so now we need a boost, but how much sunlight is needed
