Marston produced a much quicker drive but couldn't quite match Quantock, with a 2mins 7.37s. Sefton's David Birkett (Toyota Levin) won the 1300-1600cc class in 2mins 26.58s and the 1600-2000c class was won by Kaikoura's Regan Ross (Ford Escort). Cust was a warm-up event for many drivers with the MRF Tyres Mainland Rally Series kicking off this weekend in Greymouth, the first of seven rounds. Round 2 is the Otago Rally which is the opening round of the New Zealand Rally Championship.
