Q1 visitors to Taiwan fall 10%


TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Visitors to Taiwan in the first quarter of 2017 numbered 2.53 million, a 9.99 percent drop compared with the first three months of last year, the Tourism Bureau said on Monday. Tallied according to countries or areas, 659,575 Chinese visitors came to Taiwan, a drop of 41.92 percent year-on-year, while 342,270 visitors came from Hong Kong and Macau, a drop of 8.18 percent year-on-year. In the same period, 475,335 Japanese visited Taiwan, an increase of 0.11 percent year-on-year, while 293,826 South Koreans visited, an increase of 34.48 percent, according to the bureau. In Southeast Asia, 92,973 Singaporeans visited Taiwan in the first quarter, an increase of 10.66 percent year-on-year, while 129,044 Malaysians visited, a growth of 17.51 percent. Meanwhile in the first quarter, 3.64 million Taiwanese nationals went overseas, an increase of 6.58 percent year-on-year, according to the bureau.
