Michael Ondaatje is usually among the top three, along with Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro. Even in a book like Divisadero there was … research on location ... on villages, and habits, and cooking, and all these things. I’ve always been interested in what is underneath the formal landscape of a place, whether it’s New Orleans or Toronto. I didn’t want it to be a book about the Second World War, or a war novel. And it feels quite strange because this is my first interview about the book so it’s kind of interesting.
