READ MORE:* $4 billion Lake Onslow pumped hydro scheme could 'tip electricity market on head'* Just don't! Renewable electricity has a big part to play in achieving this challenge – our electricity generation is already about 80 per cent renewable, with a long-standing government target of 90 per cent renewable by 2025 and the current government’s target of achieving 100 per cent renewable generation by 2035. The Interim Climate Change Commission (ICCC) concluded that New Zealand would get to 93 per cent renewable generation by 2035 under current market conditions. And demand is becoming more complex and yet potentially more able to help, through demand response, when supply can’t keep up. On the smaller time-cycles of minutes, hours and days the combination of flexible hydro and flexible demand can enable our future supply and demand to dance in tandem.
